Further north on Rt 1, you'll come into downtown Camden. Almost as soon as you get onto Rt 1, watch for signs to your right for the Rockland Breakwater and Lighthouse (if you want to take the time and have the energy, you can walk/hike the mile-long breakwater to its end - and even if you don't, it's a nice photo and great introduction to the mid-coast area). Follow it through Augusta to Rockland, where you'll pick up US Rt 1 north. Keep right on the exit ramp (toward downtown Augusta) and you'll find yourself on ME Rt 17 East. This route also involvis taking I-95 north from Kennebunk to Augusta, but instead of getting off at Exit 113, you'll want to get off before that at Exit 109 (labeled Augusta-Winthrop). One other good alternative to the Rt 3 route described above would be to pick up Rt 1 a bit further south than Belfast. North of Portland, with a few exceptions, Rt 1 runs inland from the coast just far enough to make coastline/ocean views few-and-far-between - there are a few nice ones, but, in general, you won''t really know your as near to the coast as you thought you'd be. That's a good alternative to sticking with Rt 1 all the way - Rt 1 from Kennebunkport to Portland becomes a very commercial route, lots of trucking traffic, lots of commercial development, and very few views of coastline or water. As Leslie N notes, Rt 3 joins US Rt 1 in Belfast and the two run concurrently from there to Ellsworth, where Rt 1 continues "downeast" and Rt 3 goes on to Bar Harbor and Acadia.

which you'll follow all the way to Bar Harbor and Acadia (no "r") National Park. I-95 Exit 113 in Augusta puts you directly onto Rt 3 East.
